Ultrasonografía tridimensional en el diagnóstico precoz de malformaciones fetales

Abstract The aim of this study was to describe fetal morphologic characteristics by three dimensional ultrasonography (3D-US) in pregnant women with abnormal bidimensional ultrasonography (2D-US) or with previous congenital malformations. In this descriptive study, a 3D-US was done to those patients with previous morphological defects by 2D-US or those who had a previous malformed fetus. Patients were referred from the Prenatal Diagnosis Unit to Obstetrics Service, Hospital Nacional Posadas. An Aloka SSD 1700 with 3.5 MHz volume transducer was used. Eigth cases are presented, to whom 2D-US and 3D-US were performed. In 2 of them 3D-US was done due to malformation background and the current fetus normality was observed and confirmed at birth. The other 6 corresponded to: 1 occipital myelocele; 1 encephalocele (occipital cervical thoracic); 1 anencephaly; 2 exomphalos; and 1 exomphalos which by 3D-US added a phenotypic aspect like a Trisomy 18. We conclude that 3D-US does not replace 2D-US but gives us additional information to be applied in obstetrics in order to describe skeletal and fetal surface, being increasingly useful in complex malformations. This technology still requires carefully controlled and developed research. Key words: Three-dimensional ultrasound, prenat diagnosis, fetal abnormalities.
